Our world is in crisis: global warming, war and population displacement, financial turmoil, social unrest. These crises have a direct impact on the business world and pushes companies to understand the underlying reasons and ways to address these challenges.

This talk will unpack the concept of intersectionality, which helps us understand the interconnectedness of systems of oppression and provides the tools to devise a holistic strategy to combat them: in society and in the business world.

We will look at how patriarchy, capitalism and white supremacy are linked with each other; and dive deeper into the mechanisms and processes through which our identities as 'white', 'Black', 'lesbian', 'middle-class', or 'trans' are shaped and produced. At the end we will look into how the companies and organizations can contribute to an inclusive culture and overcome the social hierarchies established centuries ago.

About the format:

The participants will receive a profound overview of the topic and will be sensitized to its challenges with the help of practical examples. In a Q&A session, the presented contents will be reflected and discussed with own questions from the diverse corporate realities.

About the speaker:

Emilia Roig (she/they) is the Founder and Executive Director of the Berlin-based Center for Intersectional Justice (CIJ), a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing justice, equality and a life free of systemic oppression for all. Her experience growing up in a transracial Algerian-Jewish-Martinican family in France shaped her commitment to and passion for intersectional social justice. Emilia is Adjunct Faculty member of the Hertie School in Berlin since 2021, was Faculty member of the Social Justice Study Abroad Program of DePaul University of Chicago from 2015 to 2020 and has taught graduate and post-graduate courses on Intersectionality Theory, Postcolonial Studies, Critical Race Theory, Queer Feminism and International and European Law at universities all across Europe.

She is the author of the bestselling book WHY WE MATTER. The End of Oppression. She was voted "Most Influential Woman of the Year" for the Impact of Diversity Award 2022.
